How to Correctly Measure Your Dog

When purchasing dog clothing, collars, harnesses and accessories from our web site, we highly recommend that you first refer to the guidelines below to help you determine how to accurately measure your pet.

Manufacturers cut and design their products on an individual bases, therefore each item we carry has it's own individual size chart included in the product description. For proper size selection, please measure your pet according to the following guidelines, and refer to individual items for manufacturer sizing recommendations. If your pet's measurements fall in between two sizes, we suggest ordering the next larger size.

Please Note: It is NOT recommended to determine size based on your pet's breed or a previous purchase you may have made, but following the manufactures recommendations.

Measuring for Clothing

Length:
To start make sure your dog is standing properly, not sitting, slouching or laying down. Having the dog stand on two legs while someone holds the paws, enables the back to be elongated for more accurate measuring.

Measure along your dog's backbone, from the base of the neck (look for where the neck creases and collar rest) to the base of the tail (look for where the tail starts and meets the back/rear-end. Hold up the tail to find the creases).

Chest:
Measure the chest/ribcage at its widest point, all the way around, which is typically right behind the front legs.

Neck:
Measure around the neck as you would for a collar. Allow some room for a comfortable fit.

Measuring for an Adjustable Collar

To determine the size needed, measure around the mid-point of the dog's neck. Measure snug against the fur, and then add 5-10% of that measurement for adjustment. Adding 5-10% is much more accurate than "add 2 inches". Adding two inches to a small dog's collar may be too much, and likewise not enough for a larger dog.

Generally, the smallest size range that will fit is the best choice. A collar lets out to its largest size will be less bulky than one that has been doubled up to its smallest setting.

Measuring for a Combo Collar (Lupine)

These collars have no buckle and need to fit over the widest aspect of the dog's head. In addition to measuring the dog's neck, measure all the way around the head, from the highest point of the skull, under the jaw, and back up.

Please note, that a combo collar is only effective with a lead attached. This type of collar should NOT be left on an unleashed and/or unattended dog.

Measuring for a Harness

Harnesses are sized based on the adjustability of the girth. Measure around the ribcage, just behind the front legs and snug against the fur. Then add in 5-10% of that measurement to determine the size needed.
